Day 1 - by Langley and Marissa

Day 1 - by Langley and Marissa

During our first official day in Tanzania, we first had breakfast at the West Kili Lodges, where our group will be staying for the next few days. The weather has been cloudy, often with rain, yet there is more humidity than what we are used to. Every student shares a room with at least two other peers, and each lodge has a walkway to the lobby/meeting area, where we have all of our meals.

Today, the group went on a bus to go visit a nearby keeper of stingless bees. He explained to us how he extracts the honey from his 800 beehives, as well as the honey's ability to treat sicknesses. Additionally, while we learned about how these specific bees collect pollen and nectar from all different types of flowers, we all got to taste some of the honey. At first, we could tell that this was far less sugary and more sour. But then again, although it didn't taste like honey we are use to, we enjoyed it nevertheless.

Although we were all excited to learn new information, we also were very tired due to jet lag. This gave us difficulties placing our entire focus into what was happening in front of us. This caused the group's mood to be more mellow throughout the afternoon.
